Cyclones and hurricanes Tracker
Tropical cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons with damaging wind and surge. We record every cyclone / hurricane our sources report worldwide, plot it on the map and give it its own detailed page.
About cyclones and hurricanes
Tropical cyclones cause harm through four separate mechanisms: sustained wind, storm surge, inland flooding from rainfall, and tornadoes embedded in outer bands. Historically, storm surge and inland flooding kill far more people than wind.
Safety guidance
- Know whether you are in a storm-surge evacuation zone and leave before roads become impassable.
- Shelter in an interior room away from windows; the eye passing overhead is not the end of the storm.
- Stock water, medication, cash, power banks and documents in a waterproof bag.
- Most cyclone deaths come from water, not wind — take flood warnings as seriously as wind warnings.
Right now: El Niño
NOAA has an El Niño Advisory in force (issued 8 October 2026). Sea temperatures in the central tropical Pacific ran 2.2 °C above normal in Jul–Sep 2026, on the Oceanic Niño Index.
El Niño tends to suppress Atlantic hurricanes and to favour more storms in the central and eastern Pacific.
