Open-source code loaded by this site

Each library is loaded, unmodified, at the exact version below. The licence was checked against that version's own package.

Everything else, the pages, data processing, status rules, source monitor and alert delivery, is this site's own code.

Services this site depends on

  • CARTO basemaps — Map tiles. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database Licence; tile design © CARTO. Credited on every map.
  • Open-Meteo — Weather at the time and place of an incident. Data under CC BY 4.0. The free API is offered for non-commercial use; this site shows no advertising while it uses it, and would need an Open-Meteo API plan before enabling ads.
  • ntfy.sh — Delivers watchlist push notifications through its public HTTP API. The ntfy software is Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0; the service is run by its maintainer. It receives alert text and a random topic name, never an email address.
  • jsDelivr and unpkg — Content delivery networks that serve the libraries above, pinned to exact versions.
  • Google Fonts — Serves the typefaces above.
  • Google Analytics 4 — Page views and a few measured actions (source link clicked, timeline opened, report submitted, watchlist created, search, dataset download). Loads only after consent.

Data

The incident records this site compiles are published under CC BY 4.0. The agencies and publishers it collects from keep their own terms: USGS, NOAA and NASA data is US public domain, place names come from GeoNames under CC BY 4.0, country borders from Natural Earth (public domain), and news headlines are stored as a title and link only. The full list, and how to cite the dataset, is on the open data page.

GitHub projects reviewed

These projects were evaluated for incident reporting, timelines, alerts, search and dashboards. A code licence covers the software only; it gives no rights to a publisher's text, images or data, and running a service still has its own costs and terms.

ProjectLicenceWhat it doesWhat this site did
Ushahidi Platform AGPL-3.0 or laterCrowdsourced incident collection and mappingNot deployed: it needs its own server and client. Its core job, moderated public reports with location, time and sources, is built natively as the report form and its private receipt page.
KoboToolbox (KPI) AGPL-3.0Structured field-survey forms and exportsNot used. A single public report form does not need a field-survey platform.
TimelineJS3 MPL-2.0Interactive timelinesUsed unmodified as an optional view. The timeline itself is plain HTML on every incident page.
changedetection.io Apache-2.0Watches web pages for changesNot deployed: it is a server application. The same job, watching official pages and reporting new text to an editor, is built natively as the source monitor.
RSSHub AGPL-3.0Generates feeds for sites without oneNot deployed. The source monitor reads the RSS and Atom feeds that agencies already publish and queues new items for an editor. Nothing from a feed is republished automatically.
ntfy Apache-2.0 or GPL-2.0Push notifications over HTTPUsed as a service through its public API for watchlist push alerts; no ntfy code is included.
listmonk AGPL-3.0Newsletter and mailing-list managerNot deployed. Watchlist email digests are built natively, with double opt-in and one-click unsubscribe headers.
libhxl-python UnlicenseReads and validates HXL-tagged dataUsed only in testing, to confirm that the HXL export parses. The export is plain CSV with an HXL hashtag row.
Pagefind MITSearch index built from static HTMLNot used: records here change every ten minutes and the pages are generated per request, so there is no static build to index. Site search queries the database instead.
Apache ECharts Apache-2.0ChartsUsed on the statistics page.
Umami MITSelf-hosted, privacy-focused analyticsNot deployed: it needs its own server and database. The same measured actions are sent to Google Analytics, only after consent.
World Monitor AGPL-3.0Global news and information dashboardNo code used. The idea of a live board of panels is built natively as Pulse and the statistics page, with each panel stating its own coverage.
