To relieve congestion outside the stadium, an exit gate was opened, sending a large crowd into already-full central standing pens enclosed by high fences. Fans at the front were crushed against the perimeter fencing.

Ninety-seven people ultimately died. Initial official narratives blaming fan behaviour were overturned decades later; the 2016 inquests concluded the victims were unlawfully killed and identified police planning and response failures.

The disaster ended standing terraces at major English football grounds and produced the Taylor Report, reshaping stadium safety worldwide.

Why this event still matters

Historical incidents shape the rules that protect people today — building codes, evacuation policy, warning systems and inspection regimes almost always trace back to a specific disaster. Studying Hillsborough Disaster alongside current events is how preparedness improves.
